The chimney cowl is a necessary item in the fight to keeping your chimney free of debris and in keeping those down drafts at bay.
Fitted to a chimney pot a chimney cowl will keep birds and leaves from entering the chimney.
A downdraft will rush down the chimney unexpectedly and extinguish the fire or blow sparks into the room which can be hazardous. By fitting the right kind of cowl downdrafts will be minised or eliminated adding to your safety.
A chimney cap is used to block chimneys when they are not in use. This is a long term solution to keeping chimneys clear of debris, it does not have to be a permanent solution as there are chimney caps which can be removed should the fireplace be put into use again.
